Character Design - Uni Work (L2S2)
Team Project: "Historical + Horror + Circus" - Undead Clown Alex
In the lecture, our teacher has helped each team used the "Wheel of Names" spined different topics for each team. Unless my classmates in a team found they reaaaaally against the theme they can re-role up to 2 more times! Otherwise, we got our themes & topics randomly.
- I'm in the group 3 - one of a lager teams, which we have 8 members in total! My team got the random topic themes: "Historical + Horror + Circus"! 👀 (At the first, one of our random themes was "fantasy", the boy in our team really voted for re-roll it again, then we got "horror" instead at the end!)
At the 1st week, my group gathered together in the studio on the top floor (floor 8). We need to work out how to communicate, and how to share the reference, choose the same team style art, etc.
We used the Pinterest to get started, we made a character options for each us to pick (of course there was some conflicts, but we fixed that by keep communicating!)
These were our characters: Ringmaster, Clown, Tightrope, Fire juggler, Strongman (Strongwoman), Magician, Trapeze, Contortionist, Ventriloquist, Conjoined twins. To be honest, I didn't even know all the character names, so I used the dictionary a lot!😆 And here is my group's Pinterest link Historical Horror Circus (Group 3). And this is my link Historical Horror Circus (Lune).

I started with some study sketches and imaginations sketches. I didn't have a tablet for drawing, I realised everyone else got one so they can draw digitally while in the studio, so I had to only drawing on the paper. The 2nd week was similar, I still had to draw on the paper and use the traditional paints.
This clown has to be scary, and a bit ugly, he's always trying to smile but broken inside, his sister (another clown character design in our team) is his only family also only person he trusted. His age is about 50 (but he'll have to look a bit younger in the final style with same age!). His character also reflected by the Joker from the Batman! I studied from some film & game characters, I also studied the history fashion books from DJCad library, and then I make up my own thoughts of my character based on those studies. Those were all paper drawings.

Then, this is my character design sketches & the gestures. I was able to do digital on PC photoshop, clip studio paint, Krita, etc.
Then, this was my original character design:

Then, my team has to make the same style for everyone's character look like from the same person, we discussed a few styles, ended up with an art style looks closer to "Tim Burton’s signature Gothic aesthetic", so I sketched the way that can fit my team's final style decision, which is like this:

I started to feel I need to get a tablet, but it's so expensive, until I remembered I could just get a 2nd hand tablet! Three week later, I got an 2nd hand iPad. To be continued...
